Data Breaches: What to Do

Data Breaches: What to Do

Millions of Americans have been affected by data breaches, and no matter what information is leaked to bad actors, it can have consequences. Data breaches put consumers at risk for fraud, identity theft, and more. But what should you do? Who should you contact? What resources are available to you? Keep reading to learn all about what you should do in the event your data is stolen in a breach.

Be Aware.

The first step is to always be aware. Look for information on recent data breaches. If you are a customer of any of those companies, see what data was taken. Different breaches can have different data stolen. Sometimes it’s login credentials, social security numbers, or identifying personal information. However, just remember that any information that is stolen can have consequences. Even if it is only your name and address that have been breached, bad actors can use that information for fraud and other illegal activity, so you need to be prepared to take preventative action.

Act.

Depending on what information was stolen, you will want to take different steps.

If personal identifying information was stolen: If things like your name, address, and phone number were stolen, be on the lookout for phishing attempts and scam phone calls or mail.

If login credentials were stolen: Immediately contact the company and reset all passwords. Keep an eye on these accounts for several months to make sure no fraudulent activity occurs.

If your social security or other extremely sensitive information is stolen: These breaches are unfortunately the most severe and require the most groundwork. The first thing to do is visit identitytheft.gov/databreach. This website has a lot of useful information on what to do in the event of a data breach. Your biggest concern with severe breaches like this is identity theft. It is important that you monitor your credit report to make sure fraudulent accounts are not opened in your name. You may also wish to have a credit freeze. If the company who was breached offers free services to counteract the breach, take advantage of them!

Report.

If you notice fraudulent activity as a result of a recent breach, it is important that you report it. First, report it to the company who was breached. They may have services that can help you. Second, go to the same website (identitytheft.gov/databreach) and report the fraud. This website can help you recover from a data breach and will give you next steps so your information will be secure again.

Data breaches are an unfortunate part of the digital age. However, it is important that you keep yourself aware and know what to do in the event your data is stolen in a breach. The right actions can protect your information, money, and accounts from fraud.
