National Play Outside Day
The first Saturday of every month is designated as National Play Outside Day! This day is not just about getting your kids outside and away from their screens but is designed to get people of all ages outside and enjoying fun activities!
Being outside is not just fun, but it is also extremely beneficial to your health. One benefit is that it frees us from enclosed spaces. Being on screens or inside all day makes us feel enclosed literally and figuratively. A change of scenery frees you from the constraints of your environment and frame of mind. Another benefit is that the fresh air, sunshine, and increased physical activity are all good for your overall physical and mental health. The increased Vitamin D, exercise, and serotonin associated with being inside are all proven to help improve your sleep, mood, and anxiety. Lastly, playing outside can help foster imagination and creativity.
There is no such thing as too much outside play time – unless it is too hot outside! If the temperature allows, you should encourage your entire family to be outside as much as possible. There are many activities people of all ages can enjoy outside. The following activities can be fun and enriching:
- Play whatever fun game your kids come up with to foster their imagination.
- Plan a family picnic and include fun activities like flying kites, reading a book, playing tag, or throwing a frisbee.
- Go on a family hike and play fun games to engage their curiosity.
- Take to the water on hot days by visiting a lake, beach, or the local pool.
- Come up with a learning activity for everyone – like a scavenger hunt for birds or bugs.
- Go out at night and identify constellations and/or camp in your own backyard.
Any of these activities can also be enjoyed by any person looking to get outside more!
Whatever activity you decide to try, just make sure you keep the heat in mind and bring plenty of water. Coolers, fans, or cooling towels are a good way to keep everyone cool during these activities. Furthermore, proper sunscreen application is always necessary. If you children aren’t fans of traditional sunscreen application methods, many companies now offer sprays, roll-ons, or stick sunscreens that are more child friendly.
While the summer heat can make staying inside enticing, getting outside has many health benefits. Not only does it encourage quality time with loved ones, but it can help improve your mood and sleep quality. This holiday weekend, make sure you reserve time for some time to play outside!
