Shred-It Day

Shred-It Day

Saturday, May 18th is The Savings Bank’s Shred-It Day! Every year we encourage community members to compile their outdated documents and bring them out for professional shredding services. Below are the details!

Importance Of

Shred-It Day isn’t just about helping our community members dispose of paperwork; it is also about protecting people from identity theft. Many criminals rely on stealing information that can be obtained from sensitive documents which have not been disposed of properly. Things like bank statements, tax returns, and loan documents can contain identifying information that can be used against you.

Any paperwork that contains information like the following should be disposed of properly and not in the garbage:

  • Date of Birth
  • Social Security Number,
  • Account Number
  • Address
  • Phone number

Throwing documents with this information into the garbage can make it easy for criminals to obtain and then sell or use for illegal activities. Most commonly, this means identity theft.

When you drop off these documents, Shred-It employees destroy them securely on the spot. This means no one else will ever have access to the documents.

How to Prepare

Prepare for Shred-It Day by compiling all your paperwork in one place. If it is not already organized, go through and separate items by year and type. Then decide which documents to keep and which to shred. Usually, tax returns should be kept for seven years and other things like bank statements should be kept for a year. However, it is important to decide what time frame works best for you and your financial journey!

Another option would be to digitize your paperwork. Scanning and saving your documents can be a great space saver and make finding these documents a breeze! If you would like to learn more about organizing and decluttering your financial documents, visit our previous blog post Spring Clean Your Financial Documents here: https://www.thesavingsbankohio.bank/about/smartbanking-blog/post.html?cId=83451&title=spring-clean-your-financial-documents.

Finally, box up any of the documents you have decided to have shredded! Make sure you remove any paper clips, binder clips, or other objects.

The Details

This year’s Shred-It Day will be held in the parking lot of Circleville Middle School (360 Clark Drive) from 8 a.m. to Noon. This is a drive-up event and once you get to the parking lot, you will be directed by a team member. Your paperwork (5 box maximum) will then be shredded. If you would like your boxes back, just let our team members know, otherwise we will take care of them for you!

Note: The local food pantry will also be on site collecting donations of non-perishable food items. Helpful items include pasta, canned vegetables, and soup.

Thank you to all our community members and we hope to see you there!
