Holiday Craft Ideas for Kids

The holidays are an excellent time to craft with your children. Crafting is a fun way to get the whole family out from in front of the TV and stimulate their creativity. The best part is these crafts can be enjoyed by all ages!

Homemade Ornaments

If you put up a tree this holiday season, homemade ornaments are the perfect way to add a personal touch! There are many ways to go about personalizing ornaments, whether you completely make your own or use pre-made ornaments. Some retailers sell clear pre-made ball ornaments that you can fill with glitter, sequins, cotton balls, and many other fun things. However, another fun, easy way to make ornaments is through paper and string. Your children can cut the paper into whatever shape they desire and design them however they like. You could even use this year’s school photo as a base and decorate the area around it. There are thousands of ways to make this craft your own.

Tip: Parents may even write the year the ornament was made and make ornament making a family tradition for years to come.

Cookie Decorating

Cookie decorating is one of the most fun (and delicious) crafts you can do during the holiday season. We understand that the holidays are busy for everyone, but luckily, there are many options for preparing the cookies. You could make homemade cookie dough with your children and bake them together or use premade cookie dough. Some retailers even sell plain cookies that are already baked and ready for decorating. Check your local grocery store for what option works best for your family.

Once you have the cookies ready, we recommend setting up a station for your child(ren) to ensure easy clean-up. Set down some parchment paper wherever you plan to decorate the cookies. Then pre-portion out whatever icing, sprinkles, chocolate chips, et cetera you plan to decorate with. This will lessen the amount of product your child has access to, and no one must wait on anyone else. After that, clean up is a breeze and you can enjoy your cookies!

 Personalized Gift Tags

If your family gives gifts this holiday season, personalized gift tags are an excellent way to make the gift even more special. This is especially true for grandparents, aunts and uncles, and any other family member. All it takes is a little bit of string and some creativity. While gift tags are traditionally made from paper, using other materials like popsicle sticks, pom poms, pipe cleaners, or beads can make the gift tags last longer and provide a keepsake for the receiver.

Idea: Make the base of the tag out of your preferred material. Dip your child’s finger in brown paint and press to the tag. Take a brown maker and add antlers. Children can now personalize their reindeer with googly eyes, markers, pipe cleaners, or stickers.

There is no better time than the holidays to do fun crafts with your children. Not only can you make special memories together, but you can provide the entire family with heartfelt keepsakes they can enjoy for years to come. Happy Holidays from The Savings Bank!
