Spotlight On: Pumpkin Show Contests
We are all so excited that Pumpkin Show has officially started in Circleville, Ohio! This year we wanted to spotlight all the different exhibits and contests featuring the amazing residents of Pickaway County. A full schedule of events is available for viewing online at www.pumpkinshow.com.
Festivities begin after the opening ceremony at 9 am on Wednesday morning. The most famous of all the events, the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-In, draws people from all over the world! The show record is held by Bob Liggett, whose pumpkin weighed in at just under 2,000 pounds. The weigh-in will take place on Court and Main Street.
But there are many other contests to enter and view, as well! The results can be viewed by the public throughout the Show.
Fruits and Vegetables –Turnips, pears, watermelons, egg plants, and apples are just some of the exhibits to see.
Fun Fact: The original Pumpkin Show featured a similar showing of fruits, vegetables, and squash.
Flower Show – The flower show will be a diverse offering of some of the most beautiful specimens in Pickaway County. People can enter roses, dahlias, marigolds, and any other kind of flower, as well as artistic arrangements. The theme for arrangements this year is “Movies Made in Ohio,” and the theme for juniors is “A Christmas Story.” There will be many creative pieces that you will not want to miss in this exhibit.
Baked Goods – The baked goods category has the largest diversity of entries. From cakes to pies, candy to fudge, cookies to pumpkin items, there will be no shortage of excellent creations to view. Better yet, all pies (except winning pies) will be available for purchase Wednesday evening at the Pumpkin Show Building.
Home Arts and Crafts – Handmade items are some of the most fun items to go see at the Show. Residents can enter quilts, home articles, crafts, and clothing and accessories. There is even a juvenile/youth category for participants under 12. This will be a must-see exhibit.
Art Show – Adults and youths can also enter the Art Show. Participants can enter original photography or artwork, and there is even a special category for “Pumpkins Only.” There is sure to be no shortage of beautiful artwork to view!
If you’re interested in learning how to create your own art for next year’s competition, there will be craft demonstrations throughout the Show at the rear of 159 E. Franklin Street.
The Show will also feature a Big Wheel Race, Little Miss Pumpkin Show competition, Miss Pumpkin Show competition, a Float competition, and a Window Decorating competition. The Pet Parade, Baby Parade, and Parade of Bands guarantee there will be no shortage of entertainment throughout the Show.
We are so excited to see the results of all the hard work the people of Pickaway County have done this year. Have a fun and safe Pumpkin Show, everyone!
