Vacation Checklist
Whether you are going on vacation by yourself or with your entire family, putting together a comprehensive checklist of all the tasks you need to do before leaving can be overwhelming. The important thing is focusing on the essentials! That’s why we’ve put together a list of the five things that must be done before you board the plane or take off on your next road trip.
- Pets
Leaving your pets can be the hardest part of going on vacation. We want to make sure our furry (or not so furry) friends are well taken care of while we are gone. Usually, having a trusted friend or family member watch your pet is the best option. If this is not available our best tip is to talk to your veterinarian for available options in your area. They may even board animals or have staff who will. We recommend having your pet’s boarding confirmed at least a month before your departure.
- Home Arrangements
Making sure your home is secure while you are gone is very important and often overlooked. Only share with people you trust that you will be gone for an extended period, as many criminals target people who leave on vacation. (So, it might be best not to announce your departure on social media!)
If you have a neighbor you trust, let them know you will be gone and ask if they can keep an eye on the house. Make sure any security cameras are charged before you leave and test them to see that they are working properly. Friends or family can also help by driving by the house to make sure it looks undisturbed.
- Banking
Before you leave, make sure you have your banking all in order. Some banks may require you to let them know you are leaving the area or country. This will ensure your credit or debit cards remain functional while you are away. While having a certain amount of cash can help in the event of a card shut down, cash is also much more difficult to recover if stolen; it is generally recommended to use credit cards on vacation.
- “Be Prepared” Tasks
“Be Prepared” tasks are those extra little necessities you need to do in case something goes wrong.
- In the event of losing your driver’s license, passport, or phone make sure you have a backup plan.
- Make copies of any identifying documentation and make sure your full itinerary is shared with a loved one and they have a way to check-in with you.
- It is recommended that you visit the U.S. embassy if travelling overseas.
- If you have prescriptions, take a photo of the label in case you run out or your bag gets lost.
- Bring a copy of your health insurance information for an emergency.
- Packing – Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff!
Packing is one of the most stressful parts of going on vacation. Inevitably someone forgets their toothbrush or phone charger. Our position is – don’t worry about it! Make a checklist of all the things you must bring with you (items not easily purchased or replaced). Put these items in your bag first and keep them in a bag that remains with you if possible.
Keep your list simple, and if you do forget something, remember that most resorts or vacation spots will have those little items like toothbrushes, chargers, or clothing for purchase or even as a complimentary service. If you do forget something like a prescription, speak to the front desk as there may be a delivery service available to you.
Going on vacation is supposed to be fun and exciting! Make sure you focus on what really needs to be done. Sure, coming home to some spoiled milk isn’t ideal, but, as the saying goes “there’s no sense in crying over spilled (or spoiled!) milk.” Happy travels, everyone!
